California Coastal and Ocean Resources and Climate Change

California's priceless coastline and ocean resources are already changing in response to climate change. Sea level has risen measurably in the past century and will rise much more quickly in coming decades threatening coastal development, beach and shoreline erosion, flooding during storm surges, impacts to fisheries and wildlife, loss of recreation and tourism opportunities, and more. The Sea Level Rise Task Force of the Climate Action Team brought together 16 agencies and scientific experts to agree on sea level rise projections and how best to incorporate those into planning decisions. Both the Ocean Protection Council and Strategic Growth Council now incorporate those projections and planning guidance into their grant-making, helping focus new investments in climate-safer areas.
