[California Energy Commission Letterhead]

April 30, 2004

Dear Friends and Colleagues:

The California Energy Commission cordially invites you to its First Annual Climate Change Conference:

FROM CLIMATE TO ECONOMICS:
ANTICIPATING IMPACTS OF
CLIMATE CHANGE IN CALIFORNIA

Wednesday, June 9-10, 2004
Radisson Hotel, 500 Leisure Lane
Sacramento, California

The Energy Commission has a comprehensive program of research, analytical, and policy-related activities to address the growing concern of climate change in California. Through its Public Interest Energy Research Program, the Energy Commission is undertaking a broad research effort to explore climate change impacts on the state of California and improve understanding of the range and merits of possible adaptation and mitigation strategies. Results from newly generated climate projections as well as from economic and ecological analyses will allow decision makers to make informed policy decisions in response to climate change.

As part of an integrated approach to climate change research, the Energy Commission has created a virtual research center for regional-specific studies. This center, known as the California Climate Change Center, has core research activities in Scripps/UC San Diego and UC Berkeley. Scripps is doing work on climate detection, analysis, and modeling while Berkeley is focusing on economic and policy issues. To complement the core program, related research is being funded on topics such as terrestrial and geological carbon sequestration.

The Center was created to facilitate an interdisciplinary and collaborative approach to climate research and invites input to its research plan. The conference is an opportunity to exchange ideas and promote better communication between disciplines ranging from climate change detection to water system modeling. The conference is designed to foster future collaboration among researchers interested in regional climate change topics relevant to California. For additional information on the conference, please refer to the enclosed agenda.

Please come and join us in this gateway to cutting edge science on climate change and its socioeconomic as well as ecological impacts on California. Registration information will be sent out to you shortly. Mark your calendar and please forward this announcement to anyone who may be interested in attending the conference.

Sincerely,

ARTHUR H. ROSENFELD
